Niger Delta Manifesto for Ecological Justice — Youth Edition (2025)
Published by the Niger Delta Alternatives Convergence (NDAC) in collaboration with the Safe Space Development Foundation (SHADEF) and The Young Environmentalists Network (TYEN), this Youth Edition is adapted from the original Niger Delta Manifesto for Socio-Ecological Justice by the Health of Mother Earth Foundation (HOMEF). The manifesto documents over 60 years of oil extraction in the Niger Delta and its devastating consequences for the region's 40 million people. It traces the journey from pre-colonial trading kingdoms through British colonial conquest to today's reality of widespread pollution, gas flaring, and ecological collapse. It addresses state repression, oil spills, artisanal refining, corporate divestment without accountability, the shortcomings of the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), the failures of the NDDC, deforestation in Cross River State, and worsening climate impacts on coastal communities. The document closes with eight demands, including a full environmental audit and clean-up, accountability before oil companies exit, reform of the PIA and NDDC, protection of indigenous land rights, and urgent climate adaptation. Simplified for youth, grassroots defenders, and community activists, this edition is a tool for awareness, advocacy, and mobilization.
